Electrical Conduit and Cable Openings Through Concrete

A practical guide to cutting conduit and cable openings through concrete walls and floors without hitting rebar or wiring.

Cutting an opening for electrical conduit or cable through a concrete wall or slab is straightforward once three things are settled: the exact conduit or trunking size so the hole is neither too tight nor uselessly loose, a scan to confirm no live wiring or rebar sits where you plan to drill, and a plan for sealing and fire-stopping the finished opening. Skipping any of these three is where most DIY and even some contractor jobs go wrong.

We do this work constantly for electricians and builders across Gurugram, from new DLF Phase construction to retrofits in older houses on Sohna Road where a client wants an AC point, a new circuit, or a data cable run added after the fact. It sits right next to our AC hole drilling work in terms of technique, but electrical openings have their own rules because a mistake here is a safety issue, not just a cosmetic one.

Sizing the hole to the conduit

The rule of thumb we use is the finished hole diameter should be roughly 10-15mm larger than the outer diameter of the conduit or sleeve pipe, enough to allow for a sealing sleeve and some sealant compound, but not so large that it becomes a fire and pest gap that is hard to close properly. For common Indian conduit sizes:

Scanning before you drill

This is the step people skip and regret. Before any core drilling through an existing wall or slab we scan the area for rebar and, wherever there is a chance of buried wiring (near switchboards, along skirting lines, near existing points), we use a cable detector as well. Reinforced concrete walls in RCC-framed buildings common across Gurugram apartments almost always have rebar, and hitting a main bar can weaken the wall locally and destroy a diamond bit in seconds. Wall versus slab openings

Wall penetrations

Most cable and conduit runs between rooms or from outside to inside go through a wall. We drill from one side wherever possible and finish the last few millimetres from the opposite side at reduced pressure to avoid blowing out plaster or tile on the far face. Where the wall separates conditioned indoor space from outside, the opening also needs a slight outward slope so rainwater cannot track inward, a detail covered further in our monsoon waterproofing guide.

Slab penetrations for risers

Vertical cable risers between floors go through the slab itself, and these need extra care because the slab is a structural, load-bearing element with denser rebar than most walls. We always confirm the exact location against columns and beam lines from the structural drawing where available, and keep openings away from beam soffits and column faces. Sealing and fire-stopping after the cable is pulled

An open hole around a cable is a fire, smoke, pest and water path. Once the electrician has pulled the cable or conduit through, we recommend and can assist with:

  • A rigid sleeve pipe set in the hole with the cable running through it, especially for slab penetrations
  • Fire-rated sealant or mortar around the sleeve where the wall or slab is a compartment or fire-separating element
  • Weatherproof silicone sealant on external wall penetrations to stop water ingress
  • A grommet or bush at both ends to prevent cable insulation from chafing against the rough concrete edge
  • Final patching and paint touch-up, which we also cover in post-cut repair and finishing

Working with electricians on site

On most jobs we coordinate directly with the client's electrician: they mark the exact point and confirm the conduit size, we drill to that size and clean up, and they run and terminate the wiring. This division keeps liability clear, electrical work should always be terminated by a qualified electrician, our role is the clean structural opening. We drill the hole, the electrician terminates the wire. Keeping that line clear has saved more than one job from a comeback call about a loose connection blamed on the wrong trade.

Dust and disruption in occupied spaces

Electrical retrofit work is almost always in a lived-in or working space, so dust control matters more than on a raw structure site. We use vacuum-shrouded dry diamond bits or light water misting depending on the wall finish, and always mask nearby switchboards, sockets and furniture before starting. Typical costs

Pricing depends mostly on wall thickness, hole diameter, and access (a hole at height or behind fixed furniture costs more in time than a clear ground-floor wall). As an indicative range, confirm on quote: a single 40-50mm conduit hole through a standard 6-9 inch wall typically falls between ₹500 and ₹1,500, while slab riser holes with rebar and access complications run higher. Frequently asked questions

How much bigger should the hole be than the conduit?
Generally 10-15mm larger in diameter than the conduit's outer diameter, enough room for a sleeve and sealant without leaving an oversized gap that is hard to seal properly.
Will you hit rebar when drilling for cables?
We scan every wall and slab before drilling. If rebar sits exactly on the marked point we shift the hole slightly or discuss options with the electrician, since cutting through main reinforcement is avoided wherever possible.
Can this be done with the power still on nearby?
Yes for wall openings away from existing wiring, but we always ask the client or electrician to confirm and isolate any circuit near the drilling point as a safety precaution.
Do you also pull the cable through?
No, cable pulling and termination is done by a licensed electrician. We provide the clean, correctly sized structural opening and can advise on sleeve and sealing but do not do electrical termination work.
Is sealing the hole afterward really necessary?
Yes. An unsealed penetration is a path for water, pests, smoke and fire between rooms or floors. Sealing with the appropriate sleeve and sealant is a small step that avoids bigger problems later.
How long does a single conduit hole take?
Most single conduit holes through a standard wall take 15 to 30 minutes including scanning, drilling and initial cleanup.
