The most expensive core cutting mistakes are almost never about the tool, they are about decisions made before the machine even starts. 1. Cutting before confirming what is inside the wall

Concrete and masonry hide electrical conduit, plumbing lines, and reinforcement steel. A proper crew always scans with a detector or reviews the original layout drawing before marking the final cut line, and adjusts position by even 50-100mm if something is detected.

2. Assuming a wall is non-structural without checking

4. Sizing the hole from a guess instead of the actual fitting

This is the single most common bathroom and kitchen renovation error. A plumber says 4 inch pipe, someone cuts a 4 inch hole, and then the pipe with its coupling and insulation sleeve does not fit. 5. Ignoring water and slurry management

Wet diamond cutting produces a genuinely large volume of grey slurry water. Without a vacuum collection setup or at minimum plastic sheeting and a catch basin, this water runs across finished flooring, down stairwells, or through a slab joint into the flat below. 6. Cutting too fast or with excessive pressure

A core hole is not finished when the concrete plug comes out. 9. Booking the cheapest quote without checking the equipment

The lowest quote on a core cutting job is often lowest because the crew is using an underpowered hand-held drill on a job that needs a rig-mounted machine, or skipping wet cutting and dust control to save time. This shows up as a rougher hole, cracked edges, or a job that takes twice as long and still needs correction. Ask what equipment will be used and whether wet cutting with vacuum collection is included before comparing prices.
