Drilling Granite, Marble and Tile Without Chipping

A field guide to drilling neat, chip-free holes in granite, marble and tile counters and floors for taps, basins and fittings.

The short answer is: use a diamond core bit at low speed with continuous water cooling, start the hole at a shallow angle to create a guide groove, and never let the bit run dry even for five seconds. Granite, marble and tile are all hard but brittle, and the failure mode is almost always the same, a hairline crack radiating from the hole edge that only shows up a day later when the stone is under load from a basin or tap fitting.

We get called into kitchens and bathrooms across Gurugram, from DLF Phase 2 apartments to farmhouses near Manesar, mostly for two jobs: cutting a hole in a granite or quartz counter for a new wash basin or tap, and cutting through wall or floor tile to route a pipe or cable after the tiling is already done. Both look simple on video and go wrong quickly in real stone because the bit heats up, the operator pushes too hard, or the slab is not supported underneath.

Why granite and marble chip so easily

Concrete is a composite that tolerates some vibration and imperfection in the cut edge because it gets patched anyway. Stone does not forgive that. Granite is a crystalline igneous rock, hard on the Mohs scale, but it has natural grain lines and micro-fractures from quarrying. Marble is calcium carbonate, softer than granite, and it scratches and chips at lower pressure. Vitrified and ceramic tiles have a hard glazed face over a more brittle body, so the entry point chips first if the bit is not sharp or the speed is wrong.

Three things cause chipping in almost every case we have investigated on site: dry drilling that overheats the segment and causes the stone to fracture from thermal shock, drilling at full drill speed instead of a slower controlled speed suited to the bit diameter, and lack of support underneath the slab so the exit point blows out as the bit breaks through.

Tooling that actually works

Diamond core bits, not twist bits

A standard masonry twist bit will not cut stone cleanly beyond about 10mm and will absolutely blow out the underside on exit. For basin and tap holes we use diamond-tipped core bits sized to the fitting, commonly 32mm to 60mm for taps and waste pipes, and up to 100mm+ for larger basin cutouts done with a combination of core drilling and a diamond blade for straight edges. Wet drilling versus dry

Wet drilling with a steady trickle of water is strongly preferred for granite and marble. Water cools the diamond segments, flushes the slurry out of the kerf, and roughly doubles bit life. For tile in a finished bathroom where flooding the area is impractical, we use dust-free vacuum-assisted dry diamond bits at low RPM in short bursts, letting the bit cool between passes. Step-by-step technique

  1. 1Mark the centre point and mask the area with painter's tape to reduce surface scratching from bit wobble.
  2. 2Start the bit at a low angle (roughly 30-40 degrees) to score a shallow guide groove, then bring it upright.
  3. 3Drill at low RPM (typically 300-600 RPM for larger bits) with steady, light pressure, letting the diamond segments do the work.
  4. 4Keep water flowing constantly, or pause every 10-15 seconds for dry bits to cool and clear dust.
  5. 5Ease off pressure completely in the last few millimetres before breakthrough to prevent underside spalling.
  6. 6Support the underside with a sacrificial timber block or foam pad wherever the slab is thin or unsupported, such as near a counter edge.

Granite counter basin and tap holes

Undermount and top-mount basin cutouts in granite or engineered quartz need a template, a pilot hole, and often a combination technique: core drill the corners, then use a diamond blade guided by a straight edge to join them for a rectangular or rounded cutout. This is delicate work best planned before the counter is installed, but retrofits are common when a client swaps a basin model. Expect a typical range of ₹1,200 to ₹3,500 per tap hole and ₹4,000 to ₹9,000 for a full basin cutout depending on stone hardness and access, always confirm on quote since granite hardness varies by source.

Wall and floor tile openings

Cutting through finished tile for a new socket, pipe or cable run is one of our most common calls in renovated flats across Sohna Road and Golf Course Road. The tile itself is thin, but chipping the glaze looks terrible if the hole is even slightly off-centre or the bit skates. We always tape the surface, mark with a centre punch dot pressed lightly through the tape, and start the pilot groove before switching to full pressure.

When to call a professional instead of DIY

A single tap hole in an old granite counter you plan to replace anyway is reasonable to attempt with a rented bit and patience. But a basin cutout in a new imported quartz counter, or multiple tile openings in a freshly laid bathroom floor, carry real replacement cost if they go wrong. We have replaced more than a few slabs that were cracked by well-meaning attempts with the wrong bit speed. Ninety percent of chipped granite jobs we see were drilled dry at full speed with a masonry bit. The stone does not fail loudly, it just cracks quietly under the tap fitting a week later.

Protecting the surrounding surfaces

Even a clean cut generates slurry (wet) or fine dust (dry). We line the counter and floor with plastic sheeting and towels, tape cabinet edges, and vacuum immediately after each hole. For bathroom tile jobs near fitted cabinetry, we also check that the vibration from drilling has not loosened adjacent grout lines, which is a common secondary issue in older tile installations around Sector 56 and similar established colonies.

Costs and what affects them

Pricing depends on stone type, hole diameter, access, and whether the fixture is already installed (working around a fitted basin costs more than drilling a bare slab). Frequently asked questions

Can I drill granite with a regular drill bit?
No. A standard twist or masonry bit will skate on the hard surface, overheat quickly and is very likely to crack the granite. Diamond core bits at low speed with water cooling are the only reliable option for holes of any real diameter.
Does drilling granite for a tap always risk cracking it?
The risk is low when done correctly with a sharp diamond bit, low RPM, water cooling and support under the slab. Most cracks we see trace back to dry drilling at high speed or missing underside support near an edge.
Can tile be drilled without removing it?
Yes, that is the normal approach for adding sockets, pipes or cable routes after tiling. We drill through the tile and substrate directly using dust-controlled diamond bits, avoiding the need to lift and relay tile.
How long does one basin hole take?
A single tap or waste hole in granite typically takes 10 to 20 minutes including setup and cleanup. A full basin cutout is a longer job, often 1 to 2 hours depending on shape and stone thickness.
Is wet drilling messy in an occupied kitchen?
It creates some slurry which we contain with sheeting and towels and clean up immediately after. For finished spaces where water is a concern we can use dry vacuum-assisted diamond bits instead, though they work more slowly.
What is the difference between marble and granite drilling?
Marble is softer and drills faster but scratches and chips more easily on the surface, so we use finer grit bits and lighter pressure. Granite is harder and needs more time but tolerates slightly more pressure once the pilot groove is cut.
